[FANACC] May 31, 2017 at Youhu Festival @ Hannam University in Daejeon, ROK

May 31, 2017, South Korea

I was in South Korea visiting for the first time since I immigrated to Canada in 1996. I have never been back since...until this year.

May 31: we were staying obviously in Seoul and their festival performance was in Daejeon, which was about 2-3 hour train ride from Seoul Station to Daejeon. No big deal: I've had transit commutes in Vancouver that were just as long and Vancouver is 1/3 the size of Seoul!

I was worried because a Korean friend of mine said some university festivals were not open to public and restricted to university students, family, and faculty staff. This worried me greatly so after digging deep into where to contact the university, I found their Facebook page and messaged them regarding my situation: I was a foreigner from Canada wanting to see GFriend and was wondering if this university's festival performance was open to public. Luckily, they said yes, it's open to all and they wished me well on my trip! Awesome!

So, fast forward to May 31. I had injured my ankle the day before so I went to an acupuncture clinic before leaving for Daejeon to kind of relieve the pain on my ankle. They wrapped it in a bandage lining so the ankle wouldn't move too much but I was still able to walk properly. My dad said he'd go with me because he didn't want me to get injured or lost (oh please...I was the one with unlimited data SIM in Korea...) So after this, we headed straight for the Seoul Station that housed the KTX trains.

When we got to Daejeon at around 5:30pm, we took a taxi from Daejeon Station to Hannam University. There, we encountered a lot of security and parking lot staff but they didn't pay us too much attention. Mind you, there were also kids and children attending this festival which also meant there were a ton of parents as well.

We ate dinner at a nearby restaurant but my appetite wasn't there because in four hours, I'd be seeing GFriend for the first time! I parted ways with my dad who wanted to explore the university and the nearby areas while I headed for the field where they had set up the stage and lights. They were performing last at around 9pm so I would have to wait 3-4 hours to see them. However, knowing that there would be a flood of other fans, kids, and children, I had to make a choice either to shiver in the cooler weather in the second "row," or stay at the coffee shop where it was nice and warm but lose my good spot. So. I forced myself to stand for 3-4 hours. I brought a hoodie, but, man, the Korean weather is nothing like Vancouver weather. It kept raining to sunshine, to rain, to sun, and when the sun set, it was just cold.

I stood on stage right. Bad choice. You'll see why.

The whole festival performance was a sad rendition of King of Masked Singer where everyone sang a ballad which, go figure; Koreans love their ballads and sad crap. While that was going on, I was just streaming the Stanley Cup Playoffs on my phone with LTE data because, as I mentioned before, I had bought a prepaid unlimited Data SIM at Incheon International Airport after landing in Korea. I was also just listening to my own music (mix of GFriend, rock and roll, punk) just to kill the time.

After their KOMS ended, there was another artist who took the stage, whose name was Kim Gyung Hyun, who was a part of a Korean band called "The Cross." I've never heard of them so I wasn't expecting much, but when he took the stage, all the girls started screaming their heads off so I figured "oh no...not another one of those male artists!"

But..

Nope.

He impressed me. He sang a variety of his hit singles, such as "SNSD" (which was not made by SNSD, who merely covered it). The genres were a mixture of ballad, hip hop, and rock. There was no live band but he put on one heck of a show! I was thoroughly impressed and I'm disappointed I couldn't appreciate his performance enough to snap a few pictures or record some video clips.

Then. 9pm rolled around. Out of the corner of the stage near the stands, I saw six female figures enter the dressing room tent that was set up on stage left. No one noticed because they were too busy focusing on Kim Gyung Hyun, but I muttered, "Oh, GFriend arrived." Two middle school girls looked at me, looked at the entrance, and their eyed widened.

Then, the host introduced GFriends and the girls took the stage. Lights went off and the girls took their starting positions for their opening song, Me Gustas Tu.

PERFORMANCE EMOTIONS CONTINUED IN PART II! Thanks for reading this long account! I guarantee Part II will be better because it will be filled with my emotions and thoughts!
