  1. Can GFRIEND soar into promotions overseas? In this time’s card news, we will review the data of GFRIEND’s company Source Music who were recently acquired by Big Hit Entertainment. Especially with the M&A, we expect it to be a green light for GFRIEND’s overseas promotions and we’ll look at the overseas indicators related to this and how charting and album performances have changed since they debuted. If you look at GFRIEND’s album sales data for the last 3 years, you’ll see a noticeable increase in sales starting with The 2nd Album ‘Time for us’ in 2019. So far, the cumulative sales of a single album have not exceeded 100,000, but The 2nd Album which was released in January this year has sold about 93,000 copies so far. If this trend continues, the album that will be released next year will reach 100,000 cumulative sales for a single album. To support the noticeable increase in sales of GFRIEND’s albums since 2019, the number of fan cafe members has increased significantly since mid-January 2019 when ‘Sunrise’ was released and the cumulative number of fan cafe members has reached 110,000. For reference, there aren’t many teams with more than 100,000 fan cafe members (Apink, Mamamoo, I*ZONE etc.) among Korean girl groups who have official fan cafes. Looking at the change in chart ranking of GFRIEND’s songs, you can see that the ‘starting point’ is lower when they enter the chart for music released in 2018 compared to when they debuted. Unlike before, ‘Sunny Summer’ which was released in July 2018 started charting outside of the top 10, and recently released ‘Fever’ slipped out of the top 50, five weeks after it first climbed to 27th. The trend of YouTube subscribers over the past year shows a good pattern of an increase of new subscribers at the time of song release, and it has been estimated that the company has about 1.1 million subscribers in total. Among Korean girl groups who have more than 1million subscribers, about 12 teams including GFRIEND have them. In terms of GFRIEND’s YouTube traffic on a country level, South Korea shares 23% while other traffic is mostly from Asia such as Indonesia. In terms of idol groups, traffic in Korea is less than 20%, although it varies though it varies from case to case, it can be said that overseas promotions are possible to some extent. In the first half of each year after GFRIEND’s debut, it’s been reported that there were 14,000 media exposures in 2016, and since then, it has maintained at 5,000, but this number has dropped to 4,000 in 2019. In short, for GFRIEND, album sales, fandom growth, and YouTube subscribers have been growing steadily, but their charting in terms of streaming seems to have slowed down for the past year. It’s believed that the reason why the song is ranked outside of the top 10 after its release is due to problems regarding the competitiveness and popularity of streaming. In the early days of debut, it they were a ‘streaming type idol’, but now, I think that fandom power is stronger than streaming power so they can be categorised as ‘fandom type idol’. The recent merging and acquisition between Big Hit Entertainment and Source Music is expected to bring out the synergy in terms of portfolio diversification. When GFRIEND made their debut, they were just a streaming type, now they’ll evolve from fandom type to a global girl group. Source: (1) Original Article by: Gaon Chart Senior Researcher Kim Jinwoo

  6. GFRIEND’s “Time for the Moon Night” remains on top for the second straight week! This song continues its dominance over the music shows, winning all of them for the second week in a row. Despite scoring a bit less than last week, “Time for the Moon Night” is still far ahead of the competition. Congratulations again to GFRIEND! TWICE’s three week champion song “What Is Love?” rebounds four spots to No. 2 this week after falling to No. 6 last week. Rounding out the all-female group top three is one of the two new songs on the top 10 this week. It is also the first rookie artist to hit the top 10 in 2018! Moving up 10 spots to No. 3 is Cube Entertainment’s new female group (G)I-DLE. Their debut song “LATATA” is the title track from the group’s first mini-album “I Am.” The six-member multinational group has received a lot of attention for their debut, becoming the early front runner for this year’s best new artist awards. “LATATA” is a dance song with an addictive beat, and the lyrics describe the feeling of falling in love and wanting to dance. Debuting at No. 10 is Yong Junhyung’s “Go Away.” Just last week, his “Sudden Shower” reached No. 3 on our chart. Now it is replaced by “Go Away,” the title song of Yong Junhyung’s first full album “GOODBYE 20’s.” With a house beat, this dance song is about a breakup that can commonly happen to people elsewhere. 7. Ok so I am a relatively new buddy and I just purchased my first kpop album ( as gfriend is the first group I am actually obsessed with) but there is a new girl group that just came out as well. I will not name this girl group as I am not sure what the rules are for this fansite so I'm assuming we only mention Gfriend? Anyway, when Gfriend has a comeback, do you only purchase their album/support their songs or do you also buy other albums that came out at the same time. This new GG had their debut and I'm really into it but I don't wanna buy their album/download their songs because I don't want it affecting Gfriends chances of winning music shows. I want them to beat their Navillera wins so bad. I know Gfriend has such a huge following but I don't wanna take any chances.

  9. For the second time this year, GFRIEND has unseated EXO for the No. 1 spot! Their latest hit “SUMMER RAIN,” which is also our only new song in the top 10 this week, moves up 10 notches to take over the top spot this week. Just six weeks ago, GFRIEND’s “LOVE WHISPER” overtook EXO’s “Ko Ko Bop” for the top spot in our chart. Now both artists have released the repackaged version of their albums, and both are hitting the top once again. “SUMMER RAIN” won on “M!Countdown” last week, and it is GFRIEND’s third No. 1 song on our chart this year, making them the first artist in 2017 to achieve that. Congratulations to GFRIEND! “SUMMER RAIN” is the title track of GFRIEND’s repackaged fifth mini-album “RAINBOW.” It is a mid-tempo dance song that sampled “Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love) Op. 48” by Robert Schumann. The lyrics compare a sweet love story to summer rain showers. EXO’s “Power” is down one spot to No. 2 this week. This song was narrowly edged out by “SUMMER RAIN” but still managed to win on “Music Bank” last week. Rounding out the top three is Sunmi’s “Gashina,” moving back up one spot to No. 3. This song won on “Inkigayo” last week. SINGLES MUSIC CHART - OCTOBER 2017, WEEK 1 1. (+10) SUMMER RAIN 2. Power 3. Gashina 4. Energetic 5. Red Flavor 6. Like It 7. We Are 8. A Daily Song 9. BABE 10. 14. Many songs are vying for the top spot in a wide open competition this week! To our surprise, GFRIEND manages to hold on to No. 1 for the second straight week with “Fingertip.” This song is still looking for its first major music show win, but is receiving lots of love here on the Soompi music chart. Congratulations again to GFRIEND! Moving up two spots to No. 2 is BTOB’s “Movie.” BTOB is looking for their first No. 1 song on our chart and they came close this week. They also previously reached No. 2 last year with “Remember That.” Rounding out the top three is Taeyeon’s “Fine,” dropping one spot to No. 3. There are two new songs in the top 10 this week. Moving up 10 spots to No. 5 is GOT7’s “Never Ever.” This is the title song from GOT7’s latest mini-album “Arrival.” It is an addictive hip hop track with powerful beats, and the lyrics are about finding a true and eternal love. “Never Ever” won on “Music Bank,” “M!Countdown,” and “Show Champion” last week. Debuting at No. 10 is Highlight’s new song “Plz Don’t Be Sad.” Formerly known as BEAST, the five-member group changed their name to Highlight after setting up their own agency. “Plz Don’t Be Sad” is the title track of Highlight’s comeback mini-album “Can You Feel It?” It is an alternative rock based pop song with an intense EDM sound and an addictive melody. The witty lyrics send a message of warm encouragement from those who are hurt and tired. “Plz Don’t Be Sad” swept Gaon and all the internet charts as soon as it was released. It has a good chance to become our next No. 1 song! SINGLES MUSIC CHART - APRIL 2017, WEEK 1 1. fingertip (-) 2. movie (+2) 3. fine (-1) 4. Updated and effective since February 5, 2017. DIGITAL MUSIC SALES Without a doubt, digital sales is the most (but not the only) important among the list of criteria to win as it corresponds to 50% or more on most music shows. Digital sales are based on the following music online stores: MelOn, Naver, Mnet, Bugs, Olleh, Cyworld, Monkey3, Genie, Soribada, Daum MelOn is one of the biggest music online store in Korea and we encourage international fans to download and stream BLACKPINK’s music there. Here are tutorials on how to create a MelOn account and how to download & stream. Downloading means you download the entire song from MelOn App or MelOn site, usually in mp3 format and is saved on your device. A download count a point to MelOn’s download chart. Playing the song offline wouldn’t acquire a point on the chart Streaming allows you to listen to the song via MelOn app or MelOn site and it will count on digital point, you have to be online via wifi /network courier. Please remember that there are some rules for streaming on Melon: Audio quality does not matter. While streaming, do not touch the play/pause buttons. 1 stream per hour per user ID will count. Only 1 download per user will count. Also, instiz has iChart which collectively counts all sales/charts from online music stores and officially certify a song as All-Kill or Perfect All-Kill if it places #1 on all of the charts, real-time, daily and weekly. iTunes, unfortunately, doesn’t count to any Korean music show charts. PHYSICAL ALBUM SALES Physical album sales, though not as big a percentage criteria on music shows as the digital sales, is just as important to help the girls win on music shows. The following is a list of online Kpop stores international fans could purchase GFRIEND’s future albums along with the corresponding Korean chart/s they count. Yesasia = Gaon and Hanteo Charts Ktown4u = Hanteo Chart Kpoptown = Gaon and Hanteo Charts Kpopmart = Hanteo Chart ilovekart = Gaon and Hanteo Charts Synnara = Hanteo Chart SNS POINTS SNS points consist of but not limited to GFRIEND’s MV views (on Youtube, MelOn, Daum, Naver), buzz and trend on social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, MelOn, Gaon, Naver, Daum, etc. It is important to trend and talk about the girls and their songs on Twitter/Facebook as well as search “GFRIEND” or 여자친구” on Naver/Daum/MelOn/Gaon.
